The saved patterns are what matters In those patterns you play only what you want the pattern to be (only a bassline etc), you put those in the playlist to arrange the song. So the step sequencer is a container with all stuff in the project. That way the different channels get a separate pattern and that is easier to use in the playlist. One tip if you make a pattern with more than one instrument or sample playing in it I would select Then you put those patterns in the playlist. The only thing that matters in FL is what plays at what pattern. In the new pattern (or in the old) you can place new samples or instruments. So if you want a new pattern you select 'Find first empty' (in the dropdown menu above), you don't change the current one and don't delete or replace anything.
